What is Hyperpigmentation?

What is Hyperpigmentation? When dark spots begin to appear on the skin, they could be caused by hyperpignmentation, which is basically it’s when the skin begins producing more melanin, which is what gives your skin its color.

What is Hyperpigmentation

Causes of Skin Hyperpigmentation:

Various things can trigger hyperpigmentation. Sometimes the decreased function of adrenal glands may set it off. Other causes include hormonal imbalances during pregnancy, certain prescrption drugs (like antibiotics), and of course exposure to sunlight. Any area of your skin that’s already hyperpigmented gets even darker when it receives sunlight (this can happen even if you’re wearing sunscreen).

Additionally scarring and acne may cause temporary or permanent hyperpigmentation.

Types of Hyperpigmentation

There are various types of hyperpigmentation. One is melasma. This manifests as dark patches usually on a person’s face. Typically pregnant women experience melasma, but men can get it too. It is considered a temporary and treatable condition.

A second type is what we commonly call liver spots. Liver spots occur due to damaging radiation from the sun, which is why they appear on a person’s hands and face most often. Liver spots typically get treated with a bleaching cream. Unfortunately some people find their skin very sensitive to the prescription creams, which have to be used for upward of 6 months to have any effect.

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation can occur when a pimple, insect bite or other skin injury heals and is frequently seen with acne. It is caused by increased melanin in the healing process and will frequently fade on its own.

Fading your skin discolorations is a long, slow process. The most important thing you can do is to protect your facial skin every single day with Sunscreen. This will prevent your skin discolorations from getting darker. If you work to lighten your spots and then go back in the sun the spots will darken again. See The Importance of Sunscreen

Hyperpigmentation Whitening Serum Brilliant Xpression Whitening Serum is a leading edge serum that contains Arbutin - a skin whitening agent which is very popular in Japan and Asia. It promotes lightening and an even skin tone on all skin types. It also contains a combination of three new cutting edge ingredients: Melostatine 5, Biomimetic Peptides and Tyrostats. All three reduce unwanted pigmentation and lead to a clearer complexion and a reduction in skin pigmentation by limiting both melanin production (tan) and skin reddening (erythema). Prescription Treatments
PyratineXR is a prescription strength cream that is primarily used for rosacea and inflamed, irritated skin conditions, but it can also be used to lighten skin discolorations. Thier literature states it "significantly decreases symptoms of hyperpigmentation and melasma discoloration". If you are interested in using a prescription strength fade cream, you should ask your doctor about PyratineXR.

The alternative to skin cream that has recently made inroads is laser therapy. Lasers can remove the darker coloration and leave no trace behind.

What is Hyperpigmentation Other Fade Creams

Hydroquinone is the most commonly used ingredient to fade skin discolorations. However it has gotten a bad rap over the last few years and many companies have removed it from their fading products. Inexpensive Hydroquinone products are available at drugstores. It is available over the counter in 0.5 to 2% strengths and is available by prescription in 4% strength.

Some questions regarding the safety of hydroquinone have been raised, but most medical experts agree that it is a safe and effect product when used at lower strengths.

Meladerm is a popular fade and skin lightening cream that does not contain hydroquinone, mercury, steroids or other bleaching substances. It works by using an enzyme that acts on the dark areas of the face, causing them to become more active which in turns helps them return to their origiinal lighter color. It has gotten rare reviews. Instead of or in addition to the above treatments, you can also fade any spots or areas on your face with skin care products.

Vitamin C Products for HyperpigmentationVitamin C is an excellent antioxidant that often used to lighten skin. The problem is that Vitamin C is not stable in most skin care products, as it must be protected from sunlight and air exposure. I have researched vitamin C products extensively and feel that the BeautiControl Cell Block-C products are the best. They have one for daytime with an SPF, one for nightime, a serum and a brightening elixir. All are exceptional products. See Vitamin C Skin Care for more information about Vitamin C.

Exfoliation - One of the best ways to fade your spots is through aggressive exfoliation using both glycolic acid and home microdermabrasion. You want to exfoliated to the point where you are ever-so-slightly challenging your skin. This does not mean redness and irritation - if you get that you have exfoliated too much. Ideally you want to stop just short of that. It is very beneficial for your skin is challenged in this way. What happens is that it accelerates the growth and turnover of skin cells. In addition to the anti-aging benefits, skin that is damaged (discolored) will not be able to "rise to the challenge" and will eventually be replaced by healthy skin. See Benefits of Glycolic Acid and Home Microdermabrasion for more information.

What is Hyperpigmentation - Home Treatments

Some people find themselves very embarrassed by this condition as it creates uneven, blotchy skin. There are some things you can do in the privacy of your own home to help:

  • Apply a blend of equal parts honey and lemon juice as a mask. Leave on your skin for 10 minutes then rinse
  • Mix tomato juice and oatmeal as a gentle scrub. Leave this on the skin for 15 minutes then rinse.
  • Use almond milk on your face, leaving it over night, washing the next day.
  • Mix pounded fresh mint leaves with lime juice and apply evenly to your skin. Leave for 20 minutes then rinse
