What is Microdermabrasion? So exactly what is microdermabrasion? Microdermabrasion is a noninvasive procedure that uses fine particles (usually crystals) to remove the top superficial layers of skin. It improves the skin by removing and "challenging" any skin damage (scars, wrinkles, dark spots). The damaged skin cells can not restore themselves as efficiently as healthy cells and the healthy cells replace the damaged ones, thus reversing any damage. Professional Microdermabrasion is a noninvasive procedure performed by a trained and qualified professional. It involves using microdermabrasion machines (some machines cost over $10,000). The machine sprays on and "sands" the skin with aluminum oxide crystals. Each procedure typically cost $75 to $200 and many treatments (up to 12) are required for optimal results. After the procedure the skin is very dry, may peel and feels similar to a mild sun or wind burn. Home Microdermabrasion is the "kinder, gentler", do it yourself version of the medical procedure. Microdermabrasion creams, cloths, peels, kits and systems are available for home use. Obviously you are not going to get the same results as the medical procedure, but then you aren't going to be spending thousands of dollars either! Microdermabrasion is essentially a mechanical exfoliation. Alpha & Beta Hydroxy Acids and other products provide chemical exfoliation. I happen to believe that the best skin care regimen uses both mechanical and chemical exfoliants. The chemical exfoliants break down the top layers of skin and then microdermabrasion products (or scrubs) help to loosen and remove the skin.
